Hi, I’m Alex,
I read and review a fair amount of books, graphic novels and all manner of other things, mainly for the British Fantasy Society (BFS) or British Science Fiction Association (BSFA) despite being a notoriously slow reader by nature.
I was also a columnist for the now-defunct (2016) US emag BTS Book Reviews, and most of the stuff I prefer to read and write about (or watch and write about in the case of movies and TV) tends to be in the science fiction, fantasy, and horror genre. Boundaries are blurred, of course, but I’ve long gone beyond worrying about that sort of thing, frankly.
I do a fair bit of magazine and book/epub design/layout work, mainly for the BSFA and other independent publishers, and also kicked off a successful set of York Pubmeets a few years back – these are free events that take place in York city centre (UK), open to anyone, and generally involve a couple of authors reading from their work followed by short Q&A sessions, and a free book raffle (donations always welcome, of course – get in touch). The York Pubmeets are irregular events that operate on a time and schedule beyond the comprehension of mortal kin, but they do happen – follow @YorkPubmeet for the latest updates and information on these events.
Many of those who have met me in person (maybe at a Convention or one of the Northern Pubmeets that we organise for the Yorkshire area of the UK), will already know I’m not usually averse to blowing my own trumpet, or for that matter, expressing an opinion (whether it be good or bad, right or wrong, or even just to get a cheap laugh). That said, it may come as a surprise to know that (a) I’m not getting any younger, and (b) I’m actually a shy old codger who just happens to have a penchant for reading and some occasionally witty repartee. Oh yes, and there’s also a (c) If I feel strongly about something, I’ll usually throw my tuppence-worth in…
Of course, we’ll have to wait and see how this all works out in practice, but… well… let’s just say it’s a journey we can make together if you choose to tag along.
